Responsible Data Program – Projects Coordinator

The engine room is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching and supporting the use of technology in advocacy. We are a distributed team of 12 based in 9 countries and the internet is our office. Despite the fact that we are a distributed team, we create spaces for people to learn, and spend time with colleagues. What is the Responsible Data Program?

Responsible Data is : “The duty to ensure people’s rights to consent, privacy security and ownership around the information processes of collection, analysis, storage, presentation and reuse of data, while respecting the values of transparency and openness.”

The Responsible Data Program (RDP) is a collaborative effort to develop useful tools and strategies for dealing with the ethical, security and privacy challenges facing data-driven advocacy. RDP activities include organizing events; fostering discussion between communities (techies, data scientists, activists, researchers, civil society); developing and testing concrete tools & resources; contributing to developing policy discussions & spaces; and providing direct support to activists and their supporters to ensure that they work with technology and data responsibly.

Main responsibilities to the Responsible Data Program:

Administrative and logistical support related to ongoing and upcoming activities in the Responsible Data Program
Assisting in research activities related to ongoing and upcoming projects, including desk research, carrying out interviews, compiling interview notes and synthesizing / analysing research information
Drafting communications and outputs related to ongoing and upcoming projects
Maintaining good communication with partners (timely, efficient, professional)
Logistics, including scheduling across time zones and organisations
Creating and maintaining file structures for project documentation
Ensuring projects move forward smoothly and that deadlines are met (using Asana)
Maintaining a critical eye through projects to identify risks and opportunities
Working in a transparent way to ensure colleagues are kept up to date on progress
Additional responsibilities to the Matchbox, Research and Admin & Operations teams:

Support the engine room on logistics and coordination
Support the engine room on desk research and other types of research support
Technical support for the engine room when skills are a good match for the problem
Requirements:

At least 3 years experience working with and in technology for advocacy and social change
Passionate about privacy, data, and new frontiers of data and technology
Willingness and curiosity to explore responsible data concepts as projects require
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience balancing multiple ongoing projects and managing priorities
Ability to work in a decentralised and remote team
Reliable internet
Availability to start right away
Fluency in English
Sense of humor
Desirable:

Experience working in a distributed team
In-depth knowledge of and/or interest in eR work and responsible data issues
Tech skills (or the desire to learn)
