Advice: questions to ask yourself when writing a cover letter

Think about these things when writing a cover letter:

  • whether they ASK for cover letters (if not, keep it shorter)
  • if there are specific questions to answer in the requested cover letter (demonstrate __, ___, and ___. talk about ___.)
  • what substantive thoughts I have about the org to share (compliments, especially aspects the org prides itself on)
  • whether my CV demonstrates what I need it to, or whether I can add more relevant content in the letter
  • how automated is the recruitment drive
  • how broad, active, and urgent a search are they doing
  • whether it’s a recruiter (dedicated internal recruiter, non-recruiting staff, external service)
  • how large the org is
