What is Information Enabler?

Information Enabler is Liquid Telecom Kenya’s two year social entrepreneurship program recognising and supporting local digital start-ups and entrepreneurs who are providing online, local content for the African continent.

The programme’s goals tie with Liquid Telecom’s vision of connecting every African to the Internet in the belief that connectivity promotes economic growth and development.

In support of this Internet-enabled development, Liquid Telecom is committed to facilitating and encouraging the development of African content that is relevant, empowering and transformatory.

Information Enabler provides entrepreneurs with the best possible resources, including training, mentorship, and free website hosting and internet services for two years, that can all help accelerate the dissemination of information across Africa.

Eligibility
The Information Enabler program is open to everyone in Kenya who meets the following criteria…

  • incorporated private sector entities
  • producing content of demonstrable utility in promoting economic growth and development
  • micro enterprises i.e. comprising 9 staff or fewer
  • able to demonstrate need, in that they do not presently enjoy substantial seed or start-up funding, and are instead self-funded
  • less than five years old
  • posting original content to the Internet at least three times a week
  • carrying out primary research, interviews, data mining, or other primary data gathering – the aggregation of existing Internet content does not qualify 

Judges
The selection of qualifying businesses under the Information Enabler program will be undertaken by a distinguished, expert judging panel, comprising:

  • Ben Roberts, CEO, Liquid Telecom Kenya
  • Ochieng’ Rapuro, Managing Editor, Business Daily
  • Professor Akello Jalang’o, Multimedia University of Kenya

Awards
The selected entrepreneurs will receive free internet connection, free webhosting and unlimited internet usage for two years. In addition to the infrastructure prizes, the entrepreneurs will receive mentorship from established digital marketers, financial and business experts.
All decisions by the panel of judges are final. The awards will all be announced on November 5th 2015. Following the announcement of the awards, entrepreneurs will be served with documentation outlining the award programme agenda, timeline, and detail.

Application
Information Enabler is now accepting applications for the 2015/17 program. Applications open on October 1st 2015 and close on October 31st 2015.

  • The project seeks to spur and sustain the production of content of demonstrable utility in promoting economic growth and development with key beneficiaries being social entrepreneurs, bloggers, big data producers and researchers, and by effect, society.

Application guidelines
To qualify for the Liquid Telecom Information Enablers programme, entrepreneurs must be:

The Selection Process
The selection process for these awards is highly competitive and rigorous. First, written applications from all nominated candidates will be reviewed, along with examples of their recently published work. There will be four judges who will base the winners on quality of content, frequency of posting and value of the information posted. Up to ten beneficiaries will be selected within one month of the submission of their applications.
